Introduction

The movement of African Americans to the Northern United States during the 20th Century is called The Great Migration. “Between 1915 and 1970, more than 6 million African-Americans moved out of the South to cities across the Northeast, Midwest and West.”(npr.org) As I read The Warmth of the Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson, the character of Ida Mae Brandon Gladney reminded me of my grandmother, Dorothy Thomas. Both women faced economic and social problems which prompted their migration. Because education was important to my grandmother for its economic and social benefits, my grandmother set the standard of going to college for me. My grandmother’s migration contributed to my belief   about the value and importance of education in my life.
